National Temporary Workers Week
08/05/2009
With National Temporary Worker's week only a couple of months away Letterbox Recruiting and former temporary worker Heather Lloyd are holding premature celebrations. Heather began with Letterbox in July last year after graduating from university. She gained a 2:1 in Business and Marketing and has completed two temporary assignments for Letterbox, giving her the opportunity to put her skills and knowledge to good use. Heather has recently secured a position with Aldi as Area Manager and has attributed her success on the experience she has gained through her time with Letterbox.
Heather's Line Managers from both placements have spoken very highly of her capabilities and general business awareness and commented that, "Heather is a very confident and conscientious individual. Her work as a project coordinator was very thorough and accurate and worked well under her own initiative with high production levels. She brought a freshness into the office each day and we were sorry when she had to finish her time with us"
Her innovative approach was much appreciated and "During the short time that she was with us, Heather was a valuable member of our busy HR team. Heather took forward a variety of activities using her own initiative and resourcefulness to 'get things done'. She put some much needed systems in place for us and got us organised in a calm and professional way. We miss her and wish her all the best in her future career."
Letterbox consultant Heather Shafer added, "We would like to thank Heather for her hard work and dedication and wish her the very best of luck for her future. Temporary workers are prevalent in the workplace, however finding someone with Heather's devotion and determination to succeed is always refreshing."
National Temporary Worker's Week is 1st - 5th June
- Last year the recruitment industry placed 1.2 million temporary workers into work every week and made nearly 700,000 permanent placements.
- In 2006/07 the turnover of the industry was over £27billion and is in itself an important employer with over 100,000 people working in recruitment agencies.
- REC tracking data consistently finds that 80% of temporary agency workers are satisfied with their assignment.
- The role of temporary work.
- When workers are asked why they are working through an agency a TUC/YouGov poll revealed that a substantial number, 27% chose to work through agencies for the lifestyle choices it gives them. Agency work as an option of choice was also reflected in the REC/BMG research into the satisfaction levels of temporary agency workers. Here 33% of respondents said that they did not want a permanent job.
- Temporary work keeps people in work: Temporary work also gives workers a bridge into new employment when their work circumstances change. The TUC/YouGov research revealed that temporary work was keeping a substantial number of people in work whilst they were searching for a permanent job (29% of respondents).
- Temporary work provides job opportunities to target groups: The REC/BMG 360o tracking survey reveals that agencies employ a higher proportion of new entrants into the labour market (of 16-24 years olds 25% are employed through agencies, compared to 15% in the labour force as a whole) as well as a higher proportion of older workers (over 55 years olds make up 16% of agency workers, compared to 13% in the labour force as a whole).
- With respect to black and ethnic minority candidates agency work provides work opportunities for many more candidates. 18% of agency workers are from a black or ethnic minority background, compared to 7% in the workforce as a whole.
- Temporary work creates jobs and takes the strain from the permanent workforce.
- In our REC/BMG 360o tracking survey of the views of temps, agencies and employers, only 14% of employers said they would take a permanent member of staff on if an agency worker was not available.
